Crispy Onion Rings

Is there anything better than freshly made crispy onion rings? These are sweet and tender on the inside and crispy on the outside and are a fun and tasty appetizer to make at home. To make the onion rings tender on the inside, I mixed Lifeway kefir plain with the egg, which helps to tenderize the onion. The perfect finish to these onions is the homemade creamy onion sauce. It’s a version of a traditional blooming onion sauce. It’s absolutely delicious and pairs perfectly with these crispy onion rings.

Warmer weather reminds me of fair and carnvial food like french fries, onion rings, funnel cakes, and all of that good stuff. I always say, when you make something homemade it just tastes better. Maybe it’s because you know that you, or whoever made it for you, put in a little extra effort and that makes it just taste better. Or, maybe it does just taste better. Don’t get me wrong, you can get delicious food from stores (ahem, I’m a huge Oreo cookie fan over here, and no matter what I cannot recreate an Oreo cookie as good as theirs). Anyways, onion rings are one of my favorite fair foods, and this is one of those foods that you definitely cannot beat when you make it at home.

Here’s what you need to know…

First thing you need to know is what kind of onion you should use. Truly, you can use any onion on hand. I like using a sweet onion. They fry up nicely and have a good onion taste that’s not overpowering. Once you get your onion, cut the onion into 1/4 inch thick slices. Separate the onion rings from one another. You will have large and small onion rings.

For the batter, you’ll need three separate small, shallow bowls. In the first bowl, you’ll add the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. The baking powder helps the batter puff up around the onion rings. In the second bowl, you’ll whisk together Lifeway Kefir Plain and an egg. The Lifeway Kefir plain helps to tenderize the onion, creating a delicious soft, tender onion on the inside. I also like that Lifeway Kefir is nutritious and contains probiotics. If you do not have this on hand, you could substitute buttermilk for the Lifeway Kefir. For the final station, you’ll add breadcrumbs.

To fry the onions, you’ll need a large skillet with deep sides. Add enough oil so the onion rings will be able to float on the oil and not just lay in the bottom of the skillet. This will be roughly to a depth of 2 inches. Bring the oil up to 375 degrees Fahreneheit, then fry the onion rings in batches. I usually like to fry 5-6 onion rings at a time. Check the temperature of the oil before placing the next batch in, because the temperature will likely be decreased. Fry until the onions until they are golden brown, then place on paper towels to let the excess oil drain onto them.

To make the creamy onion sauce, you simply mix all the ingredients together and serve. You don’t want to skip the sauce. It’s good! Plus it’s very versatile. It works great as a dipping sauce for french fries, it’s tasty as a spread on sandwiches and even pairs well with chicken and steak.
